Called Higher (Revelation 4:1)

“After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, come up here and I will show you things which must take place after this.” (NKJV)

These verses were written by the Apostle John, after he experienced glorious heavenly things and encountered Jesus and His message for the Bride. Today, God the Holy Spirit is speaking to each of us through these words, calling us higher, showing us the open door.

Heaven is beautiful and accessible to every son and daughter of God, and today we are being reminded that there is a door standing open eternally, a door that we all can enter. The heavens are no more like “brass” and this is such good news! There’s an open door – the One we know; that door is Jesus! By the power of His blood we have access. Through His life laid down, we arise into ours, and we receive the invitation to enter in.

In these verses of Revelation chapter 4, the apostle looks and sees; he sees the open door, and it is “standing” open.  This door was not about to be shut any time soon, and it probably had been standing open forever, but John the revelator saw it when he looked. Friend, there are heavenly opportunities, miraculous doors being opened to us every day, but because of the busyness and monotony of our earthly life, we rarely see these. We are so caught up with the hypnotic cycles of a daily rat race that we are not able to stop and look! Perhaps you have been praying for a breakthrough in some area of your life, or crying out to God that nothing is changing, but there may be a heavenly door standing open right where you are. Today we are being told to “behold” it – to see it and reach out for it; to step in through that open door, because the one open before you is the one you are meant to walk through. Ephesians 1:3 tells us that God “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” so we can know that everything we need is already deposited for us in the spiritual realm. There’s a door standing open in heaven!

Then John says he heard a voice like a trumpet calling him up, calling him in. He was being told to transition to the higher level, to climb up and step into encounter. It was (and is) an invitation to relocate, (or bi-locate!) and to immerse ourselves in the wonder of the heavenly realm. It is so accessible and so possible for us to enter in, and my question to you is: Are you willing? Are you ready? How hungry are you for more? This applies to almost everything in our lives, where we can choose to increase and expand, to go higher and deeper, but unless we look we will never see. Unless we access the open door, we will never be what we long to be.

No one dragged John into this encounter against his will. In Chapter 1 and verse 10 of the book of Revelation, John tells us he was “in the Spirit” when he began to hear and see. John positioned himself to connect with God and he was not disappointed!

John says that the first voice he heard was the one that called him higher. This could mean that there were other voices he heard as he chose to go closer to the things of heaven. I have found that the first spontaneous (often unexpected) voice I hear is the voice of my Father. It may not be the booming external voice like a trumpet which John experienced, but I know the voice of my Father. Many voices may rise up to distract me from the call of God, bringing doubt, distraction, deviation from the path, or even confusion, but if I focus on the first voice I hear, I know it is the one I can follow.

We are going to look at these verses of Scripture again soon, but let me leave you with the reminder that when we consciously look and listen, there is so much more of God’s goodness we can experience in life. This may be why Jesus said (Matthew 13:16) “Blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;” There are heavenly doors waiting to open for you and deals waiting to happen. There are connections, career advancement, business ideas – just positioned to be activated by your “yes”. Holy Spirit is calling you up into heavenly realms of revelation and once you have stepped in, your life will never be the same again. Hallelujah!
