Embracing Change (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” NKJV

Many of us are resistant to change, even when we know it is necessary. I always postpone upgrading my devices mainly because it means I will have to learn a new system, get out of “comfort mode”, and step into the unknown for a while. Familiar patterns feel safe, even situations that are not ideal. As a pastor and life coach, I have worked with people who have stayed in uncomfortable and un-ideal situations in life because the familiar discomfort often felt less scary than the unknown.

As I pondered on this today, I felt the Holy Spirit say “Embrace change. This is a season of change”. I looked at what this season holds for my family and I realized we are currently facing multiple changes; and I believe this holds true for our nation, and for our churches and families. There is a shifting taking place in the heavenlies. Things are being shaken and everything will look very different when the dust settles.

Some of us love a good challenge, and dive into something new with great joy; but for most of us, change takes energy and effort, and a re-learning of some things. Change is necessary for growth. We cannot mature and grow in our faith and in our character if we never face change. New things are not birthed in the comfort zone, and any woman who has given birth will testify to this!

Nothing is meant to remain the same. Each season gives way to the next, and every created natural thing begins to age and fade away after its finite time and fulfillment of purpose. This is easy to see displayed in the four seasons through the year, when Fall prepares the way for winter, only to be pushed out by emerging Spring, which matures to its height and becomes Summer. Although we humans are eternal beings, it is true that we too have a time and a season for our appearance on the earth, and for the fulfillment of our purpose here.

The Word of God in Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that there is a time for every thing on the earth. “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven”. It goes on to say in verse 1: “A time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant”. This continues until verse 8, “A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.” This means that things change to make way for the next season and there’s nothing that is meant to last beyond its season on the earth. Also, there is nothing that is meant to last beyond its purpose. A caterpillar changes into a butterfly when the time comes. Its season as a caterpillar comes to an end when its reason and purpose ends; that caterpillar’s whole purpose was to become the butterfly! Our very life on earth is lived for the fulfillment of our purpose, and each season has its own purpose as we walk through this eternal journey we are in. When the seasons change, it is because we are stepping into another stage of our purpose and calling, and Holy Spirit is alerting us today, and inviting us to understand that things are changing rapidly around us, and that this season is about transition and overall change. Perhaps this is what you’re seeing in your life? Could it be that the turbulence and loss of predictability in your life is not some dark attack on you but the shift in season. Maybe it is God making way for change, and for beautiful new upgrades in your life. Even people may be moving out of your life, or you may be called into another place; it may not be pleasant or joyful right now, but embrace the change.

We see throughout the Word that there is always a season and a time for God to move in the lives of His people. The Greek word “Kairos” refers to a divine moment in time, when there can be a perfect synchronicity between heaven and earth, and when God intervenes in a life or situation. This is the optimum and opportune moment when everything aligns and God works everything out together for everyone involved. The “kairos” moment is like a switch that can change everything – from darkness to light, from sadness to joy, from poverty to wealth. It is a transition moment.

Today, God the Holy Spirit invites us to embrace change as something good and necessary for growth and increased strength. What is the perfect way to break out of “freeze” mode and upgrade your life? Invite Holy Spirit to change you from the inside out. This enables Holy Spirit to move on and in us, and to take us closer into the perfect image of Jesus. It’s more comfortable to stay as we are, and to hold on to every familiar detail of our thinking, responses, and our life in general; but when we accept our need for change, and we open our hearts for God to do His work in us, then there is no limit to what He can do in and through a submitted life.

Are you open to the winds of change blowing through your heart and mind? Will you permit the precious Holy Spirit to begin to change you from the inside? A tender, malleable heart that is open to the Spirit is open to His transforming power.  Even if things may seem unfamiliar and confusing in your life, know that God is within you, changing you as He equips and strengthens you to meet and adapt to change. In Him you are completely safe, even through the turbulence of transition.

So expect to see things change around you as you walk through the first part of this year and know that it is meant to be. Embrace change, and rise in the strength of God to meet new challenges. Walk with your head held high, and with your eyes on Jesus, in the power of your witness, and in the power of your God. You are His; He is preparing you for something greater, and you were truly born for such a time as this!
